July Film Contest Winner Valeriy Kozhin talks to ReelshowInt

Hi Valeriy, tell me a little bit about your background. What got you into filmmaking, and who do you draw your inspiration from?
I was born in Moscow in 1983. I finished the art school in 2001 and I passed an examination at The institute of filmmakers. I want to shoot the animated films in childhood. I see the new world with my eyes inside a film. It’s inspired me to do something new. I think that cinema is young art enough. And we have the a great opportunity to make more than we can imagine themselves in animation. 

Where did you get the idea for the film?
I get the idea from my girlfriend. She’ve read this story so long time ago.

Tell me about the casting process and pre-production? How did you assemble your crew?
It was long pre-production time. Two years. I made a lot of drawings and screens. My crew was small. Cause I what to make this film alone in generally. It make me possible to made the most whole film.

What did you shoot the film on, and with which particular equipment?
I shot the film with computer and camera. It was very difficult technique cause i drew all the frame by my hands. And touched the peace of paper with drawings. There was cut-out, drawing animation, photo and video in my film.

How long was your shoot?
I shot my film ten months.

Where was it shot, and were there any issues with locations?
The film was shot in Moscow at the studio Rassvet.

What was the editing process like?
 I edit the film by myself. And I want to do the classical edit but with the morden things. It was computer editing process in Sony Vegas Pro

What did you edit the film on?
I must to make the lengh of a film not more than 7 minutes.

How are you finding things since winning the ReelShow competition?
I find these things wonderful.

What’s your ambition? What aspect of the industry do you aspire to be
involved in?
I want to shoot the films. I like to be a director, artist and compouser in animation film.

What’s next for you? What are you working on at the moment?
I’m looking for a new screen. (project)

Finally, what’s the last film that you saw and the best film that you
have seen so far this year?
I saw The Bothersome Man. And I think it’s great film.
